I just fixed this in kicad-winbuilder BTW.
All you need is a:
make rebuild_cache
this regenerates version.h
Just put this before the main make call.

Adam and others,
What can be done so that the installed PPA package can show the correct BZR
version and date?
I'm thinking the BZR version is not being updated correctly, maybe a minor
tweak in the
PPA build recipe can fix this.
It is quite disorienting for a newbie.
