1) On 16.04 I was using nvidia driver from Ubuntu packages, but can't really
remember what version. I'm not sure if the history of package installation is
recorded somewhere.
On the other hand, I can try running 16.04 from USB stick with several
different versions of the driver.

Regarding 2) - I've managed to install nouveau driver with reasonable
performance, will post in a while if the issue is reproducible.

3) - running on 4.4.5-040405-generic now, but not for very long, can't be sure

To my utter disappointment, it happens in both 4.18.5 and 4.4.5. Last
one is really weird - I'm 100% sure that it didn't happen in Ubuntu
16.04. Now I'm going to downgrade the whole distro to 16.04 LTS and see.

With nouveau driver and 3d-party software dropped (asus_fan.ko and nbfc)
the issue is the same.

For the record - dropped all 3d-party fan-controlling software, issue still

the second disk. No updates to kernel or libs were installed. So far no

Ok, uninstalled thermald version 1.7 on Ubuntu 18.04 (kernel 4.4.0-21-generic)
and installed version 1.5 from Ubuntu 16.04.
Ran for several hours under various loads, some gaming included, all was fine.
Closed the lid, the laptop went to sleep, opened after couple of hours ->
laptop immediately

So, running 16.04.1 with 4.4.0-21-generic since October, 22 - fans work just
fine and laptop is more silent in general. Today tried to install exactly the
same kernel - 4.4.0-21-generic in 18.04. Installed ok, but it freezes just
