I just tested a Xubuntu 14.04 x64 LTS upgrade to Xubuntu 16.04. The value:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
is correct for Xubuntu. That is what causes the boot process to have the GUI
screen rather than text console messages.

same wifi card. Interesting though that iperf will show poor
performance (10Mbit/s) but web based speedtest pages show 150Mbps.
Windows will also show about 100Mbit/s with iperf running while Ubuntu

Figured out cause. Auto updates caused /boot to run out of space as auto
updates do not remove old kernels and the update process does not check
