I'm a user of the linux-image-generic-hwe-16.04 package on Ubuntu 16.04.
Until last weekend, I've never had this issue (using kernel 4.8.x) but
today on 4.10.0-27-generic this happened twice to me!
If there's a fix for this issue then it should be merged into this
release pretty quick...

You
@chihchun Thanks, but I'd like to build this on my own. Which patches
did you add?

The problem only occurs after suspend and can be reproduced. With the
previous 4.8.0 kernel this did not occur.

@chihchun Actually I could not install your kernel on 16.04 without
breaking dependencies. It requires binutils >= 2.29 (or 2.28, not sure
if I remember correctly) but Ubuntu 16.04 only includes version 2.26. So
I manually edited the config file in your archive to remove that
restriction. I guess o
@chihchun Many thanks for your work on this issue!

@kleber-souza It seems like the issue affects both Zesty and Xenial
(when using the HWE stack). Does that mean that we need an additional
tag "verification-done-xenial" or is it sufficient the way you write it
above? Thanks for clarifying!

there is definitely a bug in the fact that grub-probe is still just
looking for /dev/[device-id] instead of /dev/disk/by-id/[device-id]
which breaks everything every time you have a kernel update unless you
make those symlinks. this was supposedly fixed but you and I are both

don't remember any issue with 16.10.
I think we could close this ticket or if you have some test that I could
launch, I am at your disposal.
