kernel pan
same problem with Ubuntu 14.10 64x when use matlab to load lots of data
for training. It doesn't kill it after a couple of minutes, it takes
hours and never comes alive again. I have to restart manually and then
my ubuntu can not boot.

I had this issue as well, through ALL of the 5.x kernels. Tried everything
mentioned in the thread here, but nothing worked other than going to 4.15
kernel.
This gave me suspicions it was related to something with the UEFI handoff to
OS, so I looked for BIOS updates and sure enough there was
PTI makes my 2 32 bit laptops unstable. I have lubuntu 18.04 installed on both
and they both started having trouble after the linux-image upgrade from
4.15.0-46/47 to 4.15.0-50/51. They either fail to boot without locking up or
fail to shut down cleanly. I rarely get any useful logs or messages
I'm on Kubuntu and it was also affected by this issue after installing
the latest updates although for me it was Super+Arrow keys that change
VT (rather than Alt+KEY as described in the issue). As mentioned,
running: `sudo kbd_mode -s` resolved it.
