Immediately after a crash and forced poweroff, I ran "journalctl -b -1",
which I've pasted below (minus the huge amount of systemd-udevd logs
which are likely irrelevant). The freeze always happens in VLC, and
indeed the logs show VLC failures at the end of the logs.

Mythological, you have to fix the system to the point that you can
install packages. I am not sure you are that point yet from your
description. Once you are there, you can install an old kernel by
following the procedure outlined here

default one for 14.04, I do not have a custom version, yet I still have

Looking at apt logs, it appears my system got a gcc update the day AFTER
the kernel was pushed out. I'll try reinstalling the kernel and see if
that makes a difference.

Jay Flory, your information was the key! I removed the -116 kernel and
reinstalled it, and the graphics are fine now. It looks like this was
indeed due to a timing problem between when my system got the gcc update
and the kernel update.
It appears that I'll have to reinstall virtualbox as well.
As long as you have the updated gcc installed before you install the
kernel, it works fine.

When I executed the first line of your sequence below, I didn't get the
virtualbox version your second line needs. Instead, I got:
virtualbox-4.3_4.3.16-95972~Ubuntu~raring_amd64.deb
It was dated Oct. 6, and located in ~/Downloads
Did I miss something?

I have not yet downloaded the latest. However the problem ceased after
doing a restart of the computer. I had done a download of the latest
updates for Linux and I believe there was some Firefox updates. But I
did not restart after the Linux updates were installed. I went directly

For what it's worth, I had this problem upon letting Software Updater
upgrade my system to 3.13.0-45.
I rebooted into 3.13.0-44 and I noticed the
/boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-45-generic file was about half the size of
previous versions (at about 17MB) so I tried using Synaptic Package
Manager to reinst
