The model I have is:
Lenovo Ideapad 320 AST 80XV
I had same problem for touchpad. Tried both the solution (kernel and module)
none worked for me.

I don't know for touchpad but if EXTERNAL USB MOUSE isn't working try
this
1. Open the Terminal : ctrl+alt+t
2. cd /etc/modprobe.d/
3. sudo gedit options.conf
4. Type the following in the file which is opened by previous command:
options psmouse proto=imps
5 .Save the file and close it.
6. s

Follow this steps, it works for me:
1. Run
$ sudo -H gedit /etc/default/grub
In the open window edit line
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
it should look this way
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX

Save file and run
$ sudo update-grub
2. Run

After trying unsuccessfully to use all the fixes I found online, I
finally managed it to fix this problem myself today:
1. Install Gnome Screensaver
sudo apt-get install gnome-screensaver
2. Replace Light Locker with Gnome Screen Saver
Do it first for all new users
sudo vi /etc/xdg/aut
SS COMMAND

Hibernate has stopped working for me as well after upgrading from
Xubuntu 14.04 LTS to Xubuntu 16.04.1 LTS.
