Fairly recently I got an old HP Pavillion 14 laptop and installed
Kubuntu 17.10 on it. As far as I recall it ran fine, however, not long
after I upgraded to 18.04 and noticed frequent freezing (approx every
few hours). When this happens, all of a sudden, the screen just stays

Just tested with the latest proposed kernel: It's working. Although it takes
about 30 minutes after the booting with the new kernel for the lines to slowly

Yes, but thats a onetime thing. The bug somehow "burns" into the system, and it
needs time to "heal". Now, when I start the machine, I don't have any issues.

Tested Cosmic -proposed kernel on ThunderX, ThunderX2 and QDF2400
server. Comparing before and after dmesg output on these systems
ThunderX has more debug messages in dmesg than other systems.

ad 1) When I boot the old kernel, the lines start to appear. They stay as long
as I run the old kernel. When I boot the new kernel, they are there at the
beginning and then slowly fade away and never come again.
ad 2)3) Even if the cause was different, the reported behavior is the same.
Anyway,
I have the same problem as Steve Dodd and MV, it worked fine until
4.15.0-24-generic #26-Ubuntu, now my network will not resume after
suspend.

This looks to me as if Ubuntu (the kernel, Wayland, and/or the X server,
depending on when the problem occurs) is delivering a video mode that
the display device can't handle. (With VGA, the display should deliver
its capabilities to the computer via EDID, but this doesn't always work
correctly.) T
