Same issue here on a Thinkpad P50, although I don't see any iwlwifi
crash in the logs. Going back to the 4.10 kernel from Zesty fixes the
problem.

The weird hang may not be related to the iwlwifi module after all. When
running the vanilla 4.13.5 kernel from the mainline builds done at
canonical I can observe normal shutdowns. The wifi related message is
still there but the machine turns off normally!

It's actually a valid bug. The problem is that node 0x06 does not have
amp-out capability. Also there's no mixer that can connect 0x06 to
another node with amp-out capability.
I'll ask ALSA expert how to solve problem like this.

I wish anyone luck when trying to improve the status of the driver for
this codec. Some aspects do feel weird such as the interplay between
mixer channels.

There have been no updates to this bug report, but I wanted to post that
the latest daily 17.10 image (installed today, 10.07.2017) still has
this screen tearing problem. Worse, on a Yoga 910, it adds a problem
that the screen starts rotated 90 clockwise and can't be fixed.

Public bug reported:
This concerns linux-base 4.0ubuntu1 in Ubuntu Xenial.
Removing Linux kernel packages from the system leads to initrd
generation and causes /var/run/reboot-required to appear. Neither of
these side effects should occur if only kernel packages older than the
running one are rem
