Okay, I got it fixed for now on my machine by reinstalling the current

Not sure if this is the generic workaround.

No, this problem existed in earlier kernels also. I've used 16.04 before - and
it was the same there.
I've also tested it with the latest upstream kernel and it still exists.

Hi Joseph,
Thanks for writing back.
I did try with switching between upstream 4.8.0 and 4.8.6 and back, neither
fixed it.
However once I booted into my old 3.19 kernel the symptom went away.I may also
add that the laptop had been shut down beforehand for a good number of hours
(not plugged in).
Simply adding -mate at the end of the launchpad url on the main page
brought me to a Mate version of this site I did not know existed prior.
Sorry to bother you all, I will repost there.

I had the same problem and I solved this way, a work around:
am not sure but I think in that case swap memory should be equal to your
ram size or more, I resized to to 8gb which is equal to my ram.
open terminal and do the following:
sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
replace the line

I haven't tested xenial or kernel 4.4 with the GTX 1060 yet. Certainly kernel
4.4 works with the GTX 970 whereas newer kernels do not work (bug 1613158). I
would not expect an older kernel to fix this issue with the GTX 1060 though:
