Update: upon further reboots with acpi_backlight=vendor, trying to
adjust the brightness using the laptop hotkeys causes the brightness to

I used the 15.04 x64 live-usb (I'm still running Arch Linux now).
All I had to do was follow the support page from DisplayLink:

problem with the BT chipset firmware or something in in-kernel bluetooth
management layer as the Meizu has a newer kernel than the BQ device
(Meizu: 3.10, BQ: 3.4).
