As I've already made the permanent changes by hand to my Ubuntu
installation, I am unable to check if the subsequent kernel versions
have this issue fixed without performing a clean reinstall, which I am
unwilling to do at the moment. Please confirm with the respective teams

No it does not change anything. I tried with this kernel parameter removed on
the latest mainline upstream kernel 3.16-rc4.
As requested, tested on Precise 12.04.0 and 12.04.3 both obtained from

came across this and it appears that the fedora guys have rolled in a
patch recently that resolved the issue. I'm unable to locate the
upstream defect for this, but their defect (which is essentially
identical to this one) is here:

Hi Chris,
I cannot recall if I had same problem with Ubuntu 12.04 as its been a
long time. There was no problem with Ubuntu 13.10.
I have been trying all sorts of thing from internet but problem still
persists.

I confirm also that the proposed kernel changes #56 fixes this issue.
Problem still occurs with #55. See attached package versions which work.
Sorry, took me ages to work out how to install proposed kernel changes
to test this. :-)
