I guess each distro uses its own pace to include updates.
I was too quick to declare victory. In many cases, my touchpad did not
work after rebooting. That it was working or not seemed quite random. A
similar bug is reported in [1]. After using the workaround of adding
"i8042.reset" to the kernel
Same issue also appears in Linux Mint 18.1 Mate. In all instances, the
touchpad works in the live USB boot before installation but after
installation, its as though it is not even installed.

I was having the same problem, I think, with a very new schenker h507
(p651rp6, essentially your same laptop) using arch linux. It got fixed
magically by enabling arch "testing" repository, which contains very
recent versions of linux-firmware, libinput (I'm not using synaptics)
and others. Now my
I had tried upgrading to 16.10 using the automated upgrade to see if I
could fix the problem. This is the version for which I reported the bug.
I've since tried reinstalling with 16.04.1 and attempted the upstream
kernel fix that you recommended.
