@tomposmiko, the official way is to 1) file a bug report, 2) get that
fixed in the current development branch, and then 3) follow the SRU
(stable release update) process to get it backported into the LTS
release.
The hole birth thing is a mess, and I've got bug #1600060 open for that
in Ubuntu. Ho
What is the recommended or official way to have critical fixed in the
LTS kernel?
zfs 0.6.5.7 includes critical fixes, like hole_birth fix (workaround)
which is extremely IMPORTANT.

The v4.8 kernel that will ultimately be released in Yakkety is up to
spl/zfs 0.6.5.8. Have a look in https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-
team/+archive/ubuntu/unstable. User space is also up to 0.6.5.8

I noticed that using the wily PPA will build correct kernel modules so
this is my workaround for now (doesn't require me to backport).
