I have done a fresh Ubuntu 16.04 install and then I have installaed the
mainline kernel suggested, i.e. 4.6.0-040600rc6-generic.
I have tested all day long the machine and it seems there is no random
monitor shut-down anymore, nor "[drm:intel_cpu_fifo_underrun_irq_handler
[i915]] *ERROR*" in the k
I'll do the test you asked, thanks for the suggestion.
I've installed Ubuntu 15.04 (at the moment running kernel
4.2.0-35-generic) and this bug was NOT present; there seems there is
some kind of regression.
Will go on with investigation with mainline kernel and update.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.6 kernel[0].

I noticed (it may be useful or not) that the VGA monitor goes to sleep
mode almost only when I press a key with the focus on a window on the
VGA monitor; otherwise it happens the monitor to stay awake for hours.
