I just started getting this problem after swapping an old nvidia GFX
card with a Radeon 6850. Running Mint 17.2 (based on 'Trusty'), kernel
3.13.0-24-generic.
I found a stab-in-the-dark solution that works for me. In synaptic
package manager, I replaced all the fglrx packages with the 'updates'
