I spoke too soon - had to go back to 3.8.0-29 to get it to work again,
but now the ath9k module doesn't always load on startup and inserting it
does not fix the issue. After rebooting a couple of times to .29 OR
3.18.13-03081307 it works again...

I was having the same problem with my AR9227 wireless adapter after
updating to 3.8.0-30. Kernel 3.8.13-03081307-GENERIC fixes the issue.
Will not add fixed tag so OP can verify as well.
