I was affected by this bug. Thanks for posting it so I could find it. I
installed the hwe kernel packages (4.15 kernel) for ubuntu 16.04,
removed the old 4.4 kernels, then Parallels tools installed just fine.

Great, but what about the kernels for older LTS releases still under
support? Neil stated this affects all kernels back to and including
2.6.32. So I imagine 12.04 LTS and 10.04 LTS are also affected.
