This stopped happening for me, and I happily ran with fully operational
suspend/resume for a long time using the Linux-4.1.y series. Most
recently Linux-4.1.17. However, a few days ago I upgraded from
Linux-4.1.17 to the 4.4.y series — currently Linux-4.4.1 — and now the
same symptoms happen again:
Confirming that the workaround from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/linux/+bug/1224689/comments/7 doesn't work
for me with Ubuntu 14.04.1 with (my own locally-compiled) kernel 3.18.1
