I recently had the same issue with an accidental removal of the -extra
package.
There are NO safeguards in apt warning about potentially rendering your
system unusable if removed by accident.
And the linux-image package itself lacks many network drivers and
ESPECIALLY LACKS USB HID support!

4.0.4-040004-generic kernel (so not the very latest topline), and it
works without any trouble.

I did try to run apport-collect 1402172 with a stock (non mainline
kernel PPA) kernel, and did check out the wiki on how to resolve the
error by installing the launchpadlib package, but as I said earlier: the
package is (already) installed but I get the very same error nonetheless
