Today the system got stuck during shutdown, showing a message of pending
update. However it was in fact stuck waiting for the NetworkManager to
respond.
A few times before I noticed the battery was completely discharged after
I had shut the system down. Now it seems the system stays on overnight

I have been investigating and could not really pin point a reason.
However, I know it was one of the very first PPA I added to the system
(and other Ubuntu 24.04 installs).
Whether it is related or not I am no longer able to tell, bu
Now that the issue with kernel 6.8.0-45-generic is identified and
addressed, I can report the NetworkManager stoppages continue. At this
stage I am essentially unable to use Sleep mode. Every time the system
returns from Sleep mode either the NetworkManager is already frozen or

Thank you once more Francesco. I was now able to completely follow your
recipe, and indeed the kernel provided by the Security PPA boots
successfully.
Best regards.

Hi Francesco, thank you for posting this information. I created the
`0_Ubuntu_Security` file you suggest, but reinstall gets me again the
package from launchpad. Is there anything else I need to do to enforce
the higher priority?
Thank you.

Hi Matthew, thank you for having a look at this issue. Unfortunately
Ubuntu still does not boot after applying the changes you suggested. It
still drops back to the initramfs prompt. A log of the changes is left

Yesterday the 6.8.0-45-generic kernel image got automatically installed

Dear Philip, thank you for taking the time to look into this issue.
VirtualBox is an essential component of the course I am teaching this

over a week to get it working on Ubuntu 24.04, therefore I will wait for

Presently I have kernel 3.13.0-48-generic installed (from the automatic

those I had with Ubuntu 12.04, there is still a long way to go to catch

Hello again,
I just witnessed a Lenovo ThinkPad T420 with Ubuntu 14.04 installed
entering Suspended mode by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1. I am now certain this
issue is not related to the BIOS; it is probably affecting a
considerable range of hardware and in different ways.

Hello again,
I have tried to update the BIOS using two different methods:
. Using a virtual floppy: the update executable is over 3 Mb, and thus
the creation of the floppy fails.
. Using FreeDOS: it fails to mount any drives and thus access the
executable. Beyond this, FreeDOS is reportedly una

I managed to install and run the mainline kernel (3.17). With it the
battery discharge rate is dramatically down, about half of what it is
with kernel 3.13 (~ 15W), but still above what it was with Ubuntu 12.04.
Also, with kernel 3.17 it seems the automatic screen dimming is not
working.
Cheers.
Dear Christopher,
Here's the description at the Sony page for the BIOS R2060Y0 update:
