I found a BIOS update, to 2.06, and flashed it.
Problem has gone away, at least for the new installation.
Sigh.

If I try booting 4.18.0-15 it still crashes, but differently. Note that
4.18.0-15 is what's running on the live CD.

Next I'll try a reinstall without fetching updates.
