Try Dougss steps without the aggressive optimisations first so you get
the hang of it. Make sure it works and your hardware all works.

I think that's a different bug, probably a Nvidia problem. I reported here a
problem where depends of Intel.

I upgraded MAAS to 2.7 and since then haven't had a problem. But the
problem might still persist on 2.4.2 which I believe is default on
18.04.

To find the fix, we can do a reverse kernel bisection:
First, find the first -rc kernel works and the last -rc kernel doesn’t
work from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

file "log" suggests the build filled up the disk.
