I had to use kernel 3.13.0-157 to have suspend + newest microcode
working together without problems. Newer kernel versions would freeze
after suspend.
I downgraded microcode to 2.20140122.1 and then I could use the newest
kernel version to this date (3.13.0-162) without problems after suspend.

I didn't had time to test again the kernel but a fast fix would be

Dear Joseph,
Unfortunately I am a Linux newbie. This means that I do not even know what
you mean by "upstream kernel". I do know that when I tried Ubuntu MATE
18.10 that after three days of error messaged I went back to 18.04. I am
still trying to recover data from the initial 18.04 total meltdown
I had the same problem after upgrading to 18.10. Uncommenting
"WaylandEnable=false" worked.

It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:
1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.
2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors
Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?
Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.19 kernel[0
