What does "status: invalid" mean?
In XFCE > Settings > Additional Drivers > Additional Drivers, it's
currently set to "NVIDIA Corporation GF106M [GeForce GTX 460M] "[x] Using
NVIDIA driver metapackage from nvidia-driver-390 (proprietary, tested)".
Other options are "[ ] Using NVIDIA bindary driver
I booted from the Xubuntu 18.04.1 Install ISO, installed qemu, copied
and modified some files to adjust for user name and permissions, and ran
my Windows 10 qemu-system-x86 script - same result (black screen
displays and qemu-system-x86 runs at 100% cpu indefinitely). Totally
black screen immediate
Looks like the next step would be to test with an older NVIDIA driver
version from the Ubuntu repository, and maybe with the slightly newer
version 390.77 from the NVIDIA website also.

I have installed the v4.18.rc8-generic kernel (uname: 4.18.0-041800rc8-generic)
Unfortunately the problem remains.
Although the driver reports itself as the exact same version as in the Ubuntu
kernel (info: MWIFIEX VERSION: mwifiex 1.0 (15.68.7.p154) it produced a
slightly different dmesg output
I didn't try 'marco' because I didn't know what that is. Installing it
now.
totem used with 'marco' and 'compton' are not washed out, but strangely
transparent. See attached image for 'marco' -- compton is the same just
no messages on stderr from compton.
