I was never able to reproduce this issue on Ubuntu 14.04 but, after
reviewing the Spectre V2 mitigations in the 3.13 based 14.04 kernel, I

didn't want the decision on when to make use of IBPB to be different in
14.04 than in all

Whoops, yes, the last kernel was the second.
I built the next test kernel, up to the following commit:

I'm only on-site with these kiosks once a week, but the next time I'm
there I will run apport-collect on one of the affected systems, and see
if we can't capture the problem. I'll also investigate whether there
are any messages in kernel log files, as best I can.

Hi Kai-heng,
Here are the test results we got.
Kernel 4.15.0-14-generic failed. Transmit queue timed out. The dmesg output
is attached. The tg3 module crashes in a few seconds right after opening
the user session (e.g. about less than 10 sec).
However, kernel 4.15.0-9-generic worked like a charm.
@Shrirang - we have neither the firmware in linux-firmware nor the
driver in the kernel for bionic. We cannot apply fixes for things which
do not exist.

Applied for xenial. The patch sent to the list cannot be applied for
bionic becuase the firmware does not exist there yet. If the firmware is
needed for bionic someone will need to submit a pull request to add it.

Dwip - excellent suggestion, I agree with your suggestion on next steps. If
this is a double free we need to catch that earlier than where we are crashing.
