Verified with 14.10 Utopic LiveUSB, boot in UEFI mode, it works.
But in Legacy mode, it failed to boot with the following error message:

which could be solved by entering "live" and boot to the live desktop.

try to boot using the new kernel with "radeon.runpm=0" appended to the
GRUB command line? According to this [1] bug report this might work. I
can't really do that because uninstalling fglrx is too unreliable.

3.16.7, 3.16.4, 3.16.2, 3.16.1, and 3.16.0 - and they all work fine.
I.e. I cannot find a bad kernel in the upstream archive. It seems to
