problem. Last night I saved a VM again and everything worked great.

When no device are enslaved, it defaults to a MTU of 1500 and refuses to

Ok, after some new attempts I can file a report of what's going on.
I tried again with a live session on a daily ubuntu image. By issuing manually
inside a shell the command
sudo apt-get install bcmwl-kernel-source

Same problem Ubuntu 14.04 LTS running Unity. I cannot figure out what
are the two systems that compete with the lid going down. Workaround
consist at suspending manually and waiting for suspend to complete

We cannot modify the kernel in place because that is a file belonging to
another package. We need to re-run grub because it is going to update
the filename in the grub configuration. We are avoiding the whole of
/etc/kernel/* to avoid rebuilding the initramfs yet again after install.
