sorry, at the moment i can't reproduce how i got to this broken state, but
after a manual boot to recovery and running btrfsck the problem has gone away
for me.
- had to fix it as it's my production machine -
what i noticed though is i had to manually run btrfsck, even mount and
scan for filesy
