A little more information regarding this.
I forgot to mention in my original report that the drives I was transferring
data from are
Toshiba 3TB NTFS formatted copying files to Buffalo 3TB drive NTFS formatted.
I did some more testing. I copied a little over 500Gb of data from a
1TB USB drive (

and ran disk check. No errors were found on either.

Hello,
I have the same issue and I don't have e4rat. I started the upgrade with
"update-manager -d" The update dowloaded the packages and started
installing them but I got the kernel panic and the upgrade stopped. Now
I can't install/remove any packages because running the dpkg --configure
-a take
I have the same on my Thinkpad W510 (Nvidia Quadro FX 880M) on Xubuntu
12.10, using the xorg-edgers PPA, which brings in Linux 3.7.0.7-generic.
I installed nvidia-325 via synaptic. I get this in /var/log/syslog after
two crashes:
Sep 3 18:30:57 Escher kernel: [ 990.669702] traps: nvidia-settings
Note that hitting the close button doesn't cause a crash, just hitting
the Quit button. Other than the crash, both do the same thing.
