If the 3.8.0-26.38-generic kernel is working well for you, I believe the
best approach to this problem might be to remove the linux-image-
extra-3.8.0-19-generic package entirely. Try this:
apt-get purge linux-image-extra-3.8.0-19-generic linux-
image-3.8.0-19-generic linux-headers-3.8.0-19-generi

Burned http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/saucy-
desktop-i386.iso (downloaded an hour or two ago) to a DVD, then booted
it. I selected "Try Ubuntu".
After a while I entered "sudo reboot" in an xterm.
The system went down, ejected the DVD and the hung there.
