I have now confirmed this fault to my own satisfaction; I have stopped using
Kontact and am using Thunderbird instead. Not only is the performance just as
it should be, but more to the point; CPU usage has dropped

That is a most unhelpful response. I do not use Thunderbird, I use Kontact. I
only switched to it because I needed an email client and there has been no
response on this bug list since I posted the original report
