checking backend. There is no need for add
Hmm interesting. Maybe it is a configuration issue then?
I grepped for ispell in .kde and .kde4 but only found the mails we have
been exchanging.

Same here, I have aspell and enchant only! and while I'm writing this message
using kmail the spell checker working as expected :)

Just to mention: I'm running 4.4.4 on FreeBSD 8.0-RELEASE. I do not have
ispell installed, just aspell and iw-hspell. The automatic spellchecking in
kmail is definitely working, as I'm looking at several red underlines right
now.

Sorry, I don't understand why that dependency is required. kdelibs4
depends on Aspell and Enchant, spell check
