Another update: me and Aurelien spent the day preparing everything and fixing all issues. We are now ready to push this change, including subsequent changes to plasma-framework, kde-runtime, kde-workspace, kactivities, plasma-nm, kate and konsole. We're planning to do this after 9PM (CET) tonight.
