Somehow the spelling does not work anymore, Ispell, Aspell etc. are installed.

Yes in synaptic are both as well as other Xxspell enabled.

It's probably not up to KMail, the message; "No backup for spelling" is found
under "System Settings->Regional Settings->Spell Checker", although I chose
German as the default language. Can
