Stop the presses - I just noticed that if I click in the top corner - this is
the "fade" effect - and this seems to default to about 1 or 2 secs - which is
fine for me. So I'll use the "fade"

My current version is 21.04.2 - so I can't test it... but will try it once I
upgrade. But if I have to guess... I think the Esc key is quite far away,
whereas the S and X keys are next to each other. Thanks.

I've upgraded to 19.12.0, still no luck.
I just use the scissors to cut. I don't understand what you mean by "set
in-point" and "set out-point". I've looked all over the menu system, a
it doesn't do it automatically. So now all the video
clips/slides/titles are all jumbled up and sorted alpha.

I'm using ver 24.08.2 (on Mint 22), and the [Esc] key does nothing.
I still think making the "X" key toggle between cut and select is the best.

Strange... I tried it again.. but this time I actually cut something, then
pressed "Esc" and it switched to select.
It seems if you press "X" without actually cutting, then the "Esc" key doe
