After spending way too much time on this, I came to a partial resolution.
The problem seems to be related to EGL. The crash goes away by I disabling
EGL support in Qt 4. I am running Mesa, Nouveau and GL3

I just tried the change suggested by

freeze.
I can now move a window quickly near the screen edge.
