Okay, I tested another bunch of jpegs.
Before doing anything in digiKam, embedded GPS data was showing the correct
Altitudes in every of several programs I checked including ExifToolGUI and
in digiKam itself.

A suggestion --- use ExifTool, ExifToolGUI, or XnViewMP to add GPS and
Altitude values in some test files - NOT in digiKam itself --- and then see
if digiKam Map will display the Altitude.

Maybe my explanation was unclear - like before, the affected images do have
Altitude and not Altitude Reference.

The virtual Collection name is the name I was meaning; not the actual
folder name in the system.
For what it's worth, the only thing on my C-drive is the operating system;

There are three BEFORE that should still have all data intact and three
AFTER that got all IPTC and GPS stripped when editing a KeyWord Tag.
Previous versions of digiKam never did this.

I tried the 0522 debug version and it behaves no better than the 0517
