I thought the appimage was supposed to contain all the needed updated
libraries?
If anybody else is finding themselves in a similar situation, I ended up using
blender, which is also free / open source, but has a steep

Also, if it needs newer versions of libraries than it is seeing (to be stable),
and not throwing an error clearly indicating that, I'd call that a bug as well.
