I have discovered multiple problems, should I open separate issues for these?
1) Exiting the kate-appimage does not terminate the process. It just keeps on
running in the background. It doesn't cause CPU-load, though.

I don;t think it is. every other program (smbclient, smb4k) logins anonymously
just fine. Also dolphin works just fine with password protected shares. The
only issue is with paswordless shares.
