First of all, if you are using digiKam-8.5.0, you should revert to the ExifTool
version that is in the digiKam directory.
According to the log, ExifTool does not seem to be returning. Here is a very

ExifTool is definitely included in the digiKam-8.5.0 Windows bundle. It was
just not complete in the digiKam-8.4.0 bundle due to a packaging error.

The offending file,
DALL·E 2024-04-02 19.33.38 - Sprout Fashion 1.jpg
has a middle dot character (unicode 0xb7 or 183) that apparently is acceptable
by Windows 10 OS.

Please download DebugView from Microsoft, enable internal debugging in the
digiKam settings under Miscellaneous->System. Start DebugView, start digiKam

Still messed up though.
I chose a Collection directory with only 400MB. Less than 250 photos.
digiKam only shows 4 thumbnails as contents.
