I don't think this is very similar: in my case the application just hangs, it
does not crash or produce any error messages. Also the debug log doesn't show
any errors.

Very strange. There is no digiKam error in fact. It just locked by something. I
suspect seriously an external application which do the job...

I have now shut down the AV and started Digikam as administrator to avoid and
issues with access rights, but it's still the same: the process just hangs
there in the task manager, no GUI displayed.

The video files can be also the problem, especially with Exiv2 shared lib, but
i don't see any trace of Exiv2 dysfunction with a video file.

I have around 30,000 items on a SMB share, mostly JPEGs and a few AVI and MP4
videos.

And what do you seen with debugview program as trace while startup when problem
appears ?
