I found out the culprit. It's the service xembedsniproxy. If I kill it then the
blank space disappears. Restarting the service however does not make the blank
space reappear.

tray settings.

The problem is in KDE:Extra which is built against plain openSUSE:Leap:42.1, so
it probably won't be fixed.
