"Apply metadata to all images" is set (probably not the exact entry, I'm using
the German version).
I select "Show grouped pictures".

Another observation:
folder1/pic.jpg is portrait, folder2/pic.jpg is landscape.
Copy folder1/pic.jpg -> folder3/
Copy folder2/pic.jpg -> folder3/ => folder3/pic.jpg is displayed as portrait

Started old version digikam 7.2. With that the database server existed.
Run
mariadb-upgrade --socket=/home/jens/.local/share/digikam/db_misc/mysql.socket
After that digikam 7.3 worked. Problem solved
