Unfortunately I'm stuck because I need to swap Middle and Back buttons on my
mouse, and there isn't any way to do that currently in KWin.

Nah; this isn't enough of a problem for me for it to be worth delaying the fix.

Is there some migration so that the currently-configured timeout doesn't
suddenly double at the next upgrade? Some of us have since configured our
systems to compensate for the 50% time behaviour.

Wow, so as soon as I posted the comment and locked the screen again, it started
to constantly loop black/background with no login field.
I went into another tty and ran `loginctl unlock-session 1` to get me back in.
