What version of akonadi are you using? Recent does not say much.
Also, did you consider that changes on gmail side are the issue and not bugs
in akonadi? Google seems to like break authentication rather frequently.

Just to be clear, I am using MySQL (mariadb) backend. KMail2 works just fine
with that. I am on the arch linux though.

fluxbox does not improve situation. Same problems are observed under
kwin_wayland. I also tried to use lower resolution monitor but it was only
slightly better. Firefox and other non-qt application appear to work fine.

I also tried to disable acceleration in X11. This interestingly enough visibly
improved performance of dolphin, but Kmail continues to be bad.
