that is great information. I'm working through the ideas now but thus
far haven't found a solution. I won't repeat the whole exchange at this
point, waiting until I have something to add.

Duncan's suggestion that it could be permissions issue is worth investigating;
it could definitely be a reason for errors when launching the GUI from a
console. But not, IMHO, for issues with X11 started through a DM as the server
should in that case run as root (it does on my system at least.
