What do you mean when you say the layer isn't "checkable"? You mean
you can't toggle its visibility?

I think we need to let them know we have a new stable version, get the
stable version packaged for the DVD, and update our docs.

I'd prefer to keep things light as well. I'd rather skip adding
dependency to 4 jars for a single GUI control.
If you can build a light weight jar with just the Java files you need
for the control, that might work.
