Does the slowness still happen with other Jenkins ?
Try to view configuration on JonJ http://ci.jenkins-ci.org/, for
example.
If it's not so slow, I suspect that some plugins in your Jenkins are
doing bad things ...

No, the slowness happens with a brand new job with no history. In
fact, it happened right at initial install.
