Hiya,
I have been trying to work out if my laptop is under-performing
graphically all day, I have managed to push an extra 200fps on glxgears,
but I am trying to work out if this is normal for my card (it seems low
to be honest), but I want to find out before I start breaking things.

Well something was wrong with the driver, I am not sure what, but I
really want to get it fixed.
If I install ubuntu my card works fine, if I install debian squeeze (or
Lenny or sid) and build the latest 2D and 3D driver from git it slows to
a crawl (along with the latest stable Kernel)
